The Telangana Assembly has approved a bill to establish the Dr. Manmohan Singh Earth Sciences University at Kothagudem, committing an allocation of ₹500 crore for the project over the next two years. The funding will be used to develop campus infrastructure, set up academic departments, and recruit faculty and administrative staff.

According to the government, the proposed university will focus on disciplines related to earth sciences, including geology, geophysics, mining, environmental studies, and climate science. The institution is expected to strengthen research and academic capacity in areas critical to Telangana’s natural resources, environmental management, and sustainable development.

Officials said the decision to locate the university in Kothagudem is aimed at promoting higher education and regional development in the coal belt region, while also leveraging the area’s relevance to geology and energy studies. The project is expected to generate local employment during both the construction and operational phases.

The state government stated that the university will collaborate with national research institutions and industry bodies to enhance practical learning, research output, and skill development. Academic programmes and admission details will be announced once regulatory approvals and implementation guidelines are finalised.

The move is being viewed as a significant step in expanding Telangana’s higher education ecosystem and boosting specialised scientific research aligned with future environmental and energy challenges.
