Hyderabad Police are planning to expand the use of drones and AI-powered surveillance systems in identified crime hotspots across the city, aiming to strengthen preventive policing and rapid response mechanisms. Officials say the move is part of a broader strategy to leverage technology for smarter law enforcement.
Under the proposed expansion, drones will be deployed for aerial monitoring during large public gatherings, high-traffic hours, and in areas flagged for repeated incidents. AI-enabled cameras and analytics systems are expected to assist in real-time monitoring, facial recognition (where legally permitted), vehicle tracking, and pattern analysis of criminal activity.
Senior police officials have indicated that data-driven policing has already contributed to improved detection rates and quicker response times in certain zones. The expansion will reportedly focus on integrating surveillance feeds with command-and-control centres for faster coordination.
However, the initiative is also likely to spark discussions around privacy safeguards and data protection. Legal experts stress the importance of clear guidelines, transparency in deployment, and strict oversight to prevent misuse of surveillance technology.
Authorities maintain that the primary objective is deterrence and public safety, particularly in areas prone to chain snatching, drug-related activity, and repeat offences. Further details on rollout timelines and budget allocation are expected to be announced in the coming months
