Dating App Scams on the Rise in Telangana, Cybercrime Officials Warn

Must read

Dating app–related fraud has surged sharply in Telangana, with financial losses rising by 67% in 2025, according to official data. Authorities reported that 569 victims collectively lost around ₹2.81 crore after being targeted through online dating and social networking platforms.

Cybercrime officials revealed that young adults aged between 18 and 35 were the most affected, as fraudsters increasingly used fake profiles, emotional manipulation, and promises of relationships or investments to trap victims. In many cases, criminals built trust over weeks before convincing targets to transfer money or share sensitive financial details.

Alongside financial fraud, Telangana also witnessed a significant rise in cyberstalking and online harassment cases, often linked to dating apps and social media interactions. Victims reported persistent messaging, threats, identity misuse, and blackmail after initial contact on these platforms.

Police officials said fraudsters commonly operate in organised networks, sometimes based outside the state or even abroad, making detection and recovery of funds difficult. Investigations show that scammers frequently move money through multiple digital wallets and accounts to avoid tracing.

Cybercrime authorities have urged users to remain cautious while interacting with strangers online, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and report suspicious activity immediately. Officials also stressed the need for greater digital awareness, especially among first-time app users and young professionals.

With online interactions becoming more common, experts warn that cybercriminals are adapting quickly, making vigilance and timely reporting critical to curbing such crimes.
