Telangana Flags Possible Revenue Shortfall for FY 2026–27

Must read

The Telangana government has flagged a possible revenue shortfall for the 2026–27 financial year, with the state’s budget cell cautioning that slower growth in GST collections and land-related revenues could widen the fiscal gap. Officials indicated that early assessments suggest a mismatch between projected income and planned expenditure, prompting internal discussions on corrective fiscal measures.

According to sources familiar with the review, GST inflows have shown signs of moderation in recent months, reflecting softer consumption trends and sector-specific slowdowns. At the same time, land-related revenues, which form a significant portion of the state’s non-tax income, have not grown at the pace originally estimated.

Finance department officials said the government is closely monitoring revenue trends and exploring options to maintain fiscal stability. These may include tightening expenditure controls, improving tax compliance, widening the tax base, and reassessing certain spending commitments.

The warning comes ahead of the next budget cycle, giving the government time to recalibrate its financial strategy. Economists note that early identification of revenue risks helps prevent sudden mid-year cuts and supports more transparent fiscal planning.

While no immediate policy changes have been announced, the government is expected to outline its response in the upcoming budget session, with a focus on sustaining welfare programmes and infrastructure spending without straining public finances.
